ABOUT AUDITIONS

RSMT AUDITIONS

When you go to most auditions they will ask you to prepare something not from the show to perform.  There are many good reasons for this and most Broadway auditions are like that.  Here at RSMT, we do it a little differently in order to speed things up for you the actor.  We realize auditions and rehearsals are all on your donated time and we really try not to waste it.  We don't always accomplish that, but we do try.

We do NOT ask you to prepare anything.  We will teach you a few bars from the show.  Why do we do that you ask?  Because even if we like the piece you would have prepared, we still would need to call you back to sing something from the show.  We just kill two birds with one stone.  We let everyone work on the song till they are comfortable with it enough to sing for JJR (Jerry Reinhart ).  Many times we have returning actors and we have heard them sing many times so the need to hear them sing anything but something from the show, again is a waste of everyone's time.
We do teach you music that is sung by the character you are auditioning for or at least a song from the show that spans that character’s vocal range.

You may be interested in two or three roles, but you will only be asked to sing one song unless the other part you are interested in has a completely different range and we need to see if you have the range for either part.

After the vocal audition, we will start the reading portion of the audition.  If we can get that all done in one night, we will do that.  However, if we have too many people auditioning, we will continue on the next evening.

WHAT DO I DO?

On the night of auditions at Reinhart Auditorium, enter using entrance M in the back of the building.  Check in at the registration table.  If you pre-registered, you just give them your name and they will give you some paperwork that gives important
information about the show and tell you what to do next.  When people start arriving,  if they haven't pre-registered, they will be given a form and everyone will be directed into the meeting room.  There Mr. Reinhart will talk to you about the show and what to expect etc. and then you will split up by parts and learn your song.   One thing to remember, there will be a lot of people giving directions and sometimes the info may conflict or not sound exactly right, so PLEASE ASK THE REINHARTS.

CALL BACKS!

Some of you may be called back to read the second night or maybe later that week we may need to hear you read or sing again.  If you DO NOT get called back, that does not mean anything.  It may mean we already cast you, or it may mean we liked what we saw and we don't need to see you again.  Callbacks are usually to see how some people read with others, what they look like together, or we just need to hear more.

WHAT IF I WANT TO BE IN THE CHORUS OR DANCE?

If you want to be in chorus, all you need to do is sign up and get your packet of information.  We have always tried to give everyone a chance to be on stage and with a show like this, we need all the chorus we can get as they are on stage a great deal of the time.  You may think “oh they take everyone....how important can chorus be” or “oh it’s just chorus.”  Well, we accept everyone but our choruses work hard and only those that really want to sing stick it out, so in essence, people cut themselves.  Anyone that has seen an RSMT show can tell you just how good the chorus sounds.  Also there is no such thing as “just chorus.”  We feel chorus is so important that all cast members are required to learn and sing the chorus parts.  The chorus is as important as any
part of the show and anyone who tells you different has never been in a real chorus.  Unlike most places, we do not do dance auditions until later in the month once the show is cast.  Look for dance audition dates in your audition packet.

We hope your audition experience is a good one,  but what we really wish is that you will become involved with this show and have a wonderful time this summer as hundreds before you have.  Thank you in advance for sharing your time and talent with us.  We look forward to working with you!
